Why Women are Better Leaders & and how men can catch up!
I giggled this morning when I read this piece in the Harvard Business Review. (link below) One, because I’m a woman and two because this is not common knowledge. When I read through the article, I said finally, some statistics on “the truth”.
Before you stop reading and call me a hard-core feminist let me just clarify, I’d rather work for a man any day. Why? Well, I learned how to get to the top of the food chain in the corporate world because men showed me how. I got paid better than most women because men showed me how. I was able to sit at the table with the big boys as a woman because men showed me how.
Now, this is not today I wouldn’t reconsider wanting to work for a woman in another life, it just simply means that I was able to compartmentalize my life when I did things the way men do things in the business world. Men keep their emotions tucked away and hidden from view. Women, well, we don’t. Lol.
Now, It’s quite simple. While working in the corporate world I excelled at almost everything because my focus was on making money winning and getting ahead. My personal life was a disaster and my health suffered. I was single most of my life because of my inability to let work be work and life be life.
What I’ve learned since is that the business world is changing and its landscape is reshaping its self into a more compassionate place. Women are already equipped to face off with new challenges. We are naturally able to connect without having to compartmentalize for the sake of survival. Men are programmed to be hunter-gatherers therefore as the landscape inside the corporate walls continues to evolve, the less competition and more cooperation will be required.
How can men catch up with the women? Well for one, men can begin to embrace the idea that being male does not require them to fully emerge in the male energy all the time. There are ways men can improve and shift paradigms by simple being aware a shift must be made.
Why? Not because women are better but simply because it is the new evolution of business and without this awareness and a new shift in the way we do business, men will be left behind.
The last time I had the opportunity to be on stage to talk to a group of women about the new Heart-Centered way of doing business I remember I was told my message was too soft.
I just giggled and said, “ah that was me 10 years ago” when I had not learned the value of my feminine side and the leverage one can have with authentic compassion, trust, courage, and service. Now I coach men and women how to regain that wonderful balance of both strong attributes of great leadership.
